Your Summer Visit

Maybe you’ve driven by the winery before and have never visited. Or maybe you make sure you do stop in for a tour and tasting each time you’re in Escondido. Either way, we hope we will see you this summer!
Here are some tips for making the most of your visit:
Plan Ahead!!
Hotel, spa and dining reservations can fill up quickly during the late spring and summer months, and the same is true for tour and tasting appointments at Forgotten Barrel. As soon as you know you’re heading our way, please give us a call at (760) 450-3439 or make your reservation online. Weekends and holidays, and even weekdays, can book up at our quaint little winery. Our wine club members enjoy many benefits, including wine shipments, invitations to winery events and savings on wine purchases. They also receive complimentary tours and tastings, up to a party of four, with an advance reservation. Take a look at our wine club offerings and see if any fit your tastes!
Get Ready to Taste!
Visits to the winery include a tour through the property and winemaking facilities followed by a tasting. If you love wine, this tasting is special treat as you will taste the unique qualities presented by each varietal.

Forgotten Barrel now occupies the former Ferrara Winery, which was designated a California historic point of interest in the late 1970’s and a historic site by the city of Escondido in 1989.  The winery, was established in 1886 as one of San Diego county and Southern California’s first vineyards.  The winery was purchased in 1928 by George Ferrara, banking on the repeal of prohibition by President Roosevelt.

The winery reopened in 1932-33 with the passage of the 21st amendment.   During the next 75 years, Ferrara Winery grew to prominence in the California wine industry.  It was operated by 3 generations until 2010.  Forgotten Barrel restored the historic property and opened the tasting room in 2017 and will continue to tell the story of the Ferrara family and the history of this amazing California landmark.
